The Flat Rock Vineyard is a place of extraordinary possibility. The 2020 Hexa Pinot Noir is a perfectly framed, elegant snapshot of our pristine fruit, site and season coming together to create something magical. A glimpse at what is possible for this iconic vineyard.

A fun fact. Jamie Goode's 95 point score for the 2020 Hexa Pinot Noir was the same or higher than 3 out of 5 Bordeaux First Growths from the famous 2005 vintage which all sell for $1000+ (Château Mouton Rothschild, Château Margaux and Château Haut Brion). The articles were released on the same day.

Tasting Notes

True to the ripeness of 2020 and the extended hangtime afforded to these grapes, the wine pours an intense dark ruby colour. The nose of this youthful wine explodes with red primary fruits; a complex medley of red and black cherry, raspberry, strawberry, and black currant all perfectly balanced by the spice notes of oak ageing. On the palate, there is a distinct intensity of fruit - powerful yet finessed. The flavours match the aromas and lead to a long, lingering finish of sweet red fruit. The velvety tannins are ever present, showcasing the wines ageing potential. Decant and drink now to appreciate the opulence of the 2020 vintage or carefully cellar for 5-10 years to experience the seamless integration of its components

Vineyard Designation

Flat Rock Vineyard

Vineyard Notes

The 2020 Hexa Pinot Noir comes exclusively from the 17th Street Block, the eastern most part of the Flat Rock Vineyard. Planted in 2001, the vines here are some of the oldest on the property with root systems able to penetrate the coarse yellow clay-loam till and glacial deposits, digging deep to reach our signature dolomitic limestone. The water retention and cooling effects of the soils allow the grapes on this 4.27 acre block to ripen longer and develop deeper concentration and complexity.

Winemaker Notes

Last Pinot Noir pick of the vintage on September 27th from the 115/SO4 clone of the 17th Street Block. The ripeness of the vintage allowed for 17% whole cluster fermentation. 10% new French oak barrels from 5 different cooperages (50% Cadus barrels, Ed's favourite).
